Prior to founding Miller Black Associates LLC, Joanna has more than 25 years of experience as a retained search consultant, including many years as a partner at Russell Reynolds Associates, Korn Ferry International and Horton International.
In addition to her search practice, she has also led a Management Assessment Practice. Joanna’s client work has mainly focused on senior staff positions in human resources, and other corporate functions in a variety of industries, including consumer products, financial services and not-for-profit.
Fluent in French in addition to English, Joanna has worked on a number of global and international assignments, especially in Europe. Joanna served on the global Board of Directors of the Association of Executive Search Consultants and was its Vice Chairman.
Prior to her executive recruiting career, Joanna was a corporate lending officer with Citibank and held a series of financial management positions at PepsiCo.
Educational credentials include an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia, where Joanna served on the Corporate Advisory Board for ten years; and a BA from Lake Forest College. Joanna has completed the Coaching Certification Program at Columbia University. She is a frequent speaker on issues related to talent acquisition and development.
In her spare time, Joanna is a runner, yoga practitioner, and sailor.
Julia Knowlton is a Managing Director with Miller Black Associates LLC, where she partners with clients to attract, select, hire and onboard Human Resources and Corporate Function executives.
Prior to joining Miller Black, Julia was Head of Talent Acquisition for the corporate office of The Hartford, and its subsidiary, Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO). She started her career in executive search in the New York City office of a global boutique retained search firm, focused on Investment Banking. Prior to working in the executive search industry, Julia was with Citigroup in Transaction Banking and Human Resources. Earlier in her career she worked in online advertising sales and sports marketing. This diverse background allows her to quickly understand industries and assess talent across any function while consistently providing exceptional client and candidate experience.
Julia has worked successfully with clients to recruit senior leadership professionals in HR (including CHROs, HR Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, Total Rewards, and Learning), Strategy and Business Development, Finance, Corporate Security, Legal, Compliance, Enterprise Risk Management, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Investment Management.
When not working, Julia can be found racing sailboats or skiing. Julia received her Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University.
Hendrik de Zwart
Hendrik de Zwart is a Consultant with Miller Black Associates LLC, supporting Joanna Miller and Julia Knowlton with research as well as leading his own searches.
A graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Hendrik’s first position out of college was with an online bookkeeping startup in London, where he honed his client-service skills selling, onboarding, and providing ongoing support to accountants and small business owners before joining Miller Black Associates as a Research Associate in 2011.
Hendrik has successfully led searches for leadership roles in Talent Acquisition and Security, as well as Human Resources Business Partner positions.
Having spent his youth in Paris, Hendrik is bilingual in English and French. He is a passionate skier and fan of motorsports and can be found either skiing or watching Formula 1 on the weekend, depending on the season.
Lisa Callaway is a Consultant to Miller Black Associates LLC, where she partners with Miller Black and clients to recruit the best talent in the market across a variety of industries.
Prior to aligning with Miller Black, Lisa ran Fundraising and Marketing for The Lewis School of Princeton, a private school serving students with learning differences. At Lewis, she was instrumental in recruiting and staffing for senior level roles including CFO, Marketing, Board Development, and school operations. She started her career in executive search in the Princeton office of Korn/Ferry International, a global executive search company where she focused on consumer product and service companies and rose to become Client Partner.
Lisa has worked successfully with clients to recruit senior leadership professionals in Human Resources, Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, Research and Development, Finance, Business Development and CEO and COO level roles.
When not working, Lisa can be found skiing or playing tennis. Lisa received her Bachelor of Arts from The University of Virginia and an MBA from Rutgers University.
Pieter de Zwart
Pieter de Zwart is the Chief Operating Officer of Miller Black Associates LLC. His responsibilities include Finance, Tax, Legal, Information Technology and Human Resources. He assumed this role at the outset of the firm in 2010, helping Joanna Miller with the creation of Miller Black.
Previously, Pieter was the Chief Information of the United Nations development Program based in New York, where he contributed to the modernization of UNDP’s software programs.
Before joining the UNDP, Pieter worked for ten years for Thomson Multimedia, a Paris based $7 billion multinational in the consumer electronics industry. He joined Thomson as group financial director and one year later was appointed as the company’s Chief Information Officer.
Prior to Thomson, Pieter was with Medtronic, a leading Minneapolis based medical products company, initially as its international finance director and later as its chief financial officer of the company’s Paris based EMEA region. He had garnered his international finance knowledge and experience working for Olin Corporation and FMC Corporation in international finance and treasury.
After obtaining his law degree at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands, Pieter started his professional life as a young banker with Bank of America’s Amsterdam branch, followed by stints at the bank’s San Francisco headquarters and its Chicago regional office.
Pieter is fluent in English, Dutch and French. He is a passionate sailor (1968 Olympics) and an active skier and golfer.
